The Nigerian Youth For Atiku (NYFA), a support group for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize reforms of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mr. Dare Dada, the group’s Director of Communications for Nigeria and the Diaspora, made this appeal in Lagos during the NYFA’s bi-monthly strategic meeting.

Dada revealed that one of the key resolutions from the meeting held on Sunday was the need for comprehensive reforms of INEC, as well as the police and other security agencies, to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also emphasized the importance of ensuring that government reforms and policies address the country’s pressing socio-economic challenges. Dada urged the administration to conduct a thorough review of policies to ensure they are yielding positive results for Nigerians.

“Governments have the authority to make and review policies, especially when they are not effective. Given the current economic hardship, the administration’s priority should focus on reducing unemployment and alleviating the suffering of Nigerians,” he said.

Dada pointed out that issues such as inflation, naira devaluation, and high unemployment rates have eroded the value of Nigerians’ disposable income, and these problems remain unaddressed. He also stressed the urgency of managing these economic challenges to prevent further hardship.

In addition, Dada urged the government to conduct an honest assessment of existing policies and tackle the issue of multi-taxation by various agencies, which he said was stifling businesses.

“While we await a comprehensive review of previous reforms, we implore the government to withdraw its current tax reform bill from the National Assembly for a proper public debate on its sustainability and suitability,” he added.
