Undergraduate students at the University of Calabar are voicing concerns about significant cracks in the walls of their hostels, fearing potential collapse due to ongoing heavy rains in the area.
During a phone-in program on Unical International Radio titled ‘What I Will Do If I Had Power to Run Unical,’ students highlighted that hostel halls 8 and 9 are particularly vulnerable and have remained in poor condition for years.
A female student, identifying herself as Jane from Malabor Republic, expressed a desire for immediate renovations, stating, “These walls can cave in at any time and kill people’s children.” She urged the university authorities to take action before it’s too late.
Another male student raised issues about the lack of electricity in the hostels, which he claimed has led to unhealthy situations.
Students have called on their welfare bodies and the Student Union Government to advocate for their needs. However, Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Bankong Obi reassured that the hostel conditions have been noted and will be addressed.
