A Rwandan soldier opened fire in a bar on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of five civilians in a southwestern town, according to the army. The motive behind the early morning shooting remains unclear.

The Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF) identified the assailant as a 39-year-old sergeant. The RDF stated in a release, “The suspect has been arrested and will face necessary legal action.”

This incident follows a troubling history, as in 2020, six Rwandan soldiers were apprehended for allegedly assaulting and raping civilians during the Covid pandemic lockdown in the Kangondo slum of the capital, Kigali.
