The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed allegations made by Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, accusing Nigerian Navy personnel of complicity in oil theft.
Tompolo, CEO of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, alleged that some Navy officers were actively undermining efforts to combat crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.
Speaking during a visit by the Nigerian Bar Association’s national leadership, Tompolo criticized the Navy for allegedly aiding oil thieves and cited specific incidents where Navy personnel reportedly clashed with Tantita operatives and other state agencies to protect illicit activities.
In response, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, refuted these claims during the military’s bi-weekly briefing. He emphasized the military’s commitment to cooperation and national interest, stating, “We seek collaboration, not conflict. Blackmail will not deter us from increasing crude oil production and addressing economic challenges. The Navy and Tantita share a common objective—protecting Nigeria’s resources.”
Buba also outlined the military’s broader efforts against security threats, highlighting successes over the past week, including the elimination of 115 terrorists, the arrest of 289 suspects, and the rescue of 138 kidnap victims. The military also recovered nearly 900,000 liters of stolen crude oil and diesel worth ₦921 million and dismantled extensive illegal refining operations.
Addressing allegations of reprisal attacks in Abia State, Major General Buba reaffirmed the professionalism of Nigerian troops, stating, “Our operations target terrorists, not innocent civilians. There will be consequences for those responsible for attacks, but we remain focused on dismantling threats to national security.”
The DHQ called for unity among stakeholders, stressing that the fight against oil theft and terrorism requires collective responsibility.
