Suspected Herdsmen Kill Chief on Farmland In Ogun State
Members of Oke-Oha Village in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, were thrown into mourning as the lifeless body of their community chief, Ogunleye Olaegbe, was discovered on his farmland.
The tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday when villagers stumbled upon the chief’s body lying in a pool of blood. Confirming the event, the Ogun State Police Command revealed on Thursday that the 49-year-old Baale was shot dead by suspected herdsmen while working on his farm.
A source close to the investigation disclosed that the chief suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was dragged from his farmland before being abandoned in a nearby bush. Speaking on the matter, Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police spokesperson, said evidence at the crime scene indicated that Ogunleye had been shot in the chest.
Odutola remarked, “The Imeko Police Division was alerted by a community member about the incident. Officers promptly arrived at the scene, where they discovered the lifeless body of Ogunleye Olaegbe, aged 49. He had been attacked by unidentified gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, while working on his farm.
“The attackers dragged him into a nearby bush and shot him in the chest, resulting in his death. The body was evacuated to Ayetoro General Hospital mortuary for an autopsy. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to apprehend the perpetrators are in full swing. Enhanced surveillance has been implemented to ensure law and order in the area.”
The attack adds to the growing list of assaults allegedly carried out by herdsmen in the region, many of which have targeted farmers and community leaders.
In a previous interview, Olutunde Aninkan, a youth leader from the Coalition of Youth Groups in the area, lamented the incessant attacks, stating, “The losses are monumental. Confronting these attackers often leads to more violence, as they are heavily armed.”
Authorities have intensified their efforts to address the security challenges, but residents continue to demand more robust measures to ensure their safety.
