Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, the principal of Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, Akwa Ibom State, has been suspended following allegations of poor feeding practices for students at the school.
The suspension was announced on Saturday by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, in response to a viral video showing students being served unappetizing and non-nutritious meals.
Condemning the situation, Etiebet ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and the overall condition of boarding facilities in the school and across the state’s 25 boarding secondary schools. She stated that the review would focus on hostels, dining halls, recreation areas, menus, kitchens, and sanitary facilities, with oversight from the permanent secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board.
In her statement, she said:
“After viewing the disturbing video, I made an unannounced visit to Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep. I have instructed a comprehensive investigation into the state of the boarding facilities there and in all other boarding secondary schools across the state. Pending the outcome of this investigation, the principal, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, has been suspended with immediate effect.”
She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that public school facilities meet basic standards for the welfare and dignity of students and staff.
While noting that the state’s free education policy only covers tuition and not boarding fees, the commissioner appealed to parents to support their children’s welfare. She emphasized that the well-being of students remains a top priority for the government.
