Renowned Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has called on the federal government to reinstate Tajudeen Baruwa as President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
His appeal follows the election of Alhaji Musliu Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo, as the union’s new national president.
The leadership of the NURTW, under Baruwa, declared MC Oluomo’s inauguration illegal, citing rulings from both the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal, which recognized Baruwa as the legitimate president.
In a statement, Falana urged the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately restore Baruwa to his rightful position as national president of the NURTW.
Titled, ‘FG Should Restore Comrade Tajudeen Baruwa as President of NURTW Without Delay’, Falana’s statement highlighted a series of incidents, stating: “On August 28, 2023, a group of armed thugs stormed the National Secretariat of the NURTW in Abuja.
Tragically, a security officer guarding the premises lost his life during the violent attack. Following the invasion, the Secretariat was forcibly taken over, and the elected President, Comrade Tajudeen Baruwa, along with members of his Executive, were arrested and charged with murder in a Magistrate Court in the Federal Capital Territory.
