Members of the Osun State Transport Management System are currently staging a protest in Osogbo in response to the shooting of their chairman, Wakeel Nurudeen Alowonle, by operatives from the Osun State Police Command Anti-Kidnapping Squad on Monday night.

Protesters have blocked the expressway at Aregbe Park, causing significant traffic disruptions.

According to eyewitness Muhammad Jamiu, the protest has severely impacted commercial transportation, although some private vehicles have been permitted to pass through. “The situation is challenging here. The road is blocked, and police intervention is crucial to prevent further escalation. Currently, no commercial buses can get through, only a limited number of private cars,” he stated.

Reports indicate that Alowonle was arrested on Monday night for allegedly possessing a police pistol and ammunition. In response to the incident, Kolapo Alimi, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, expressed grave concerns on Tuesday about the alleged near-fatal shooting of Alowonle in police custody, asserting that the incident stems from a domestic dispute.
