The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed that residents will resist any attempt to impose Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as the next governor of the state.

This comes after several groups recently endorsed Seyi as a potential successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.

One such group, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, issued an endorsement on Tuesday in Owerri, Imo State, suggesting Seyi Tinubu could run for governor in Osun or Imo States, where his family reportedly hails from. Similarly, another group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu, described him as a visionary leader with intellect, empathy, and strategic acumen, adding to the endorsements.

However, these endorsements have sparked criticism. Speaking to Sunday PUNCH, Hakeem Amode, spokesperson for the Lagos PDP, rejected the idea, stating, “Lagos will not serve him.” He questioned whether political office should be treated as an inheritance, emphasizing that the governorship was not a role to be passed down within a family.

“If they think they can adopt the same tactics they used in Edo or Ondo, Lagosians will resist it,” he said, referencing past political maneuvering in other states. Amode also pointed out that many Lagosians did not support President Tinubu in the last presidential election, suggesting the electorate would similarly oppose Seyi Tinubu’s bid for governor.

The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths also condemned the idea, asserting that non-indigenes should not govern Lagos.

Meanwhile, Seye Oladejo, spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, dismissed the speculation about the 2027 elections as premature. “It’s too early to be discussing 2027. Let’s focus on supporting the current administration to drive development,” he said.

APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe also weighed in, calling the push for Seyi Tinubu’s governorship a distraction. Writing on Facebook, he said, “Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos Governor? The real target is to discredit President Bola Tinubu. Ruling Lagos is not a job for amateurs.”
