Prof. Lai Olurode, a retired Professor of Sociology at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has urged governments at all levels to prioritize responsible spending on public goods such as education, health, and infrastructure.
He cautioned against wasteful expenditures on extravagant projects and questionable personnel emoluments that fail to improve citizens’ lives.
Olurode emphasized that investments in critical sectors like education, healthcare, and roads would significantly benefit the majority of the population.
Reflecting on a recent merit award conferred on him by the Osun State government for his contributions to educational development in Nigeria, Olurode expressed surprise and gratitude. He noted that he had no personal connections to the government and did not lobby for the recognition, describing it as a providential honor. He pledged to use the platform of academia to further promote citizenship and societal development.
“I will support any government committed to lifting Nigerians out of poverty and making substantial budgetary allocations to enhance people’s welfare,” he stated.
However, Olurode stressed the need for constitutional reform, particularly addressing the imbalance between the federal government and the regions. He called for greater synergy between all levels of government to achieve meaningful progress in the country.
Using the opportunity, he appealed to Governor Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke to ensure equitable distribution of public goods across Osun State.
Olurode also urged governments to adhere to ethical governance principles and prioritize service over politics, commending the Osun State government for its recognition of his efforts.
