Early on Wednesday, gunmen targeted an army checkpoint in Ekenobizi, a border community between Abia and Imo states, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers. The assault occurred at approximately 6:18 am, with attackers arriving in a white Lexus vehicle, although their exact number remains unconfirmed.
Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA confirmed the incident in a press release, stating that troops were attacked by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network. Despite the ambush, the soldiers were able to repel the attackers, causing them to retreat with injuries and abandoning their vehicles. Tragically, two of their own lost their lives in the confrontation.
The Joint Task Force has called on South East residents, particularly in Abia State, to provide credible information to aid in tracking down the assailants and fighting against criminal activities in the area. They reaffirmed their dedication to safeguarding lives and property in accordance with global standards and engagement protocols.
