The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the immediate implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for all administration staff.
This announcement was contained in a statement signed by Anthony Odeh, Press Secretary to the Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, and made available to journalists on Tuesday.
President Bola Tinubu had signed the Minimum Wage Bill into law in May 2024, approving N70,000 as the new minimum wage following negotiations with organized labour.
Labour unions in the FCT, including the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, recently threatened to shut down activities on November 30, 2024, over delays in implementing the new wage in some states, including the FCT. They also accused the Wike-led administration of failing to engage with them since his inauguration in August 2023.
However, in a statement issued on November 18, 2024, Acting Head of Civil Service for the FCT, Mrs Grace Adayilo, confirmed that Wike approved the payment of the minimum wage along with three months’ arrears, effective from November 2024.
“This gesture will further motivate staff to support the minister in delivering on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Adayilo said.
The minister’s decision underscores his commitment to the welfare of FCT administration staff.
