Nnamdi Kanu
Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has called on President Bola Tinubu to implement the United Nations Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) directive to release Kanu.
Ejimakor criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari for ignoring the UNHRC’s July 2022 order to free Kanu and urged Tinubu not to repeat the same stance. The UN’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had also recommended compensation for Kanu over his controversial arrest and extradition from Kenya to Nigeria.
In a statement issued Saturday, Ejimakor emphasized Nigeria’s legal obligation to adhere to international treaties and laws, stating, “Nigeria is duty-bound to implement this decision… It is never too late to act, even as Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has endured three and a half years of detention without legal justification.”
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since June 2021. Ejimakor urged President Tinubu to release Kanu without requiring additional court orders, highlighting the humanitarian and legal implications of prolonged detention.
