An Ogun Special Anti-Cultism Court in Abeokuta sentenced 27-year-old Afeeze Ishola to seven years in a correctional facility on Friday for his involvement in a secret cult.
Ishola, a resident of Otitoloju Street, Mile 2, along Ayetoro Road in Abeokuta, was found guilty of belonging to an unlawful society on a single count charge.
Magistrate Mr. J.A. Akan ruled that the prosecution had established Ishola’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. He classified the evidence presented as substantial, consequently imposing a seven-year sentence without the option for bail.
Prosecutor Insp. Olaide Rawlings informed the court that the offense occurred on September 2, 2022, at approximately 4:30 a.m. at Opara 11 Estate, Abeokuta.
According to her account, Ishola was apprehended by a security officer stationed in the community. “Ishola was found wandering the area when the security guard approached him for questioning,” she stated.
She further explained that he was attempting to evade a rival cult that sought to harm him and was subsequently handed over to a police officer residing in the vicinity.
Rawlings identified Ishola as a member of the Eiye Confraternity Cult group and noted that he confessed to his cult affiliation upon his arrest.
She emphasized that his actions violated Section 34 and were punishable under Section 36 of the Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism, and other Anti-Violence and Related Offenses Laws of 2016.
