A driver narrowly escaped death on Monday after a 40-foot loaded container fell onto his Toyota Camry at Mile 2, en route to Apapa, Lagos State.
The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a statement. He credited the driver’s rescue to the swift response of LASTMA and other emergency services, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
“The victim was promptly rushed to the hospital by the joint rescue team and received immediate medical attention,” the statement read. It also noted that officers from the Kirikiri Police Division provided security during the operation, ensuring an orderly environment for responders. The Toyota Camry was later removed from beneath the fallen container.
Efforts to evacuate the container are ongoing, with LASTMA officers managing traffic at the scene to ease congestion and restore normalcy.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the importance of proper container securing by truck drivers and owners. He warned that negligence in this regard poses severe risks to lives and property, urging strict adherence to road safety protocols.
“LASTMA remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Lagos roadways,” Bakare-Oki said. “We will continue to work closely with stakeholders to uphold traffic laws and enhance public safety.”
