The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists launched an attack on troops engaged in stabilization operations at a defense site in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State. According to a statement from the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, five soldiers were killed in the assault.
The statement indicated that ten soldiers sustained injuries, and four are currently unaccounted for. Additionally, troops successfully eliminated several terrorists and seized weapons during the clash.
“The coordinated attack resulted in five soldiers killed in action, ten wounded, and four missing. Our troops also neutralized several terrorists and recovered various arms,” Buba reported. He noted that enemy forces burned equipment, including one gun truck, three tactical armored vehicles, and an excavator.
In response to the attack, the DHQ has dispatched a reinforcement team, complete with air support, to search the surrounding area and investigate the terrorists’ escape route.
“However, it is important to emphasize that such attacks will not deter the troops and armed forces of Nigeria from their commitment to eradicating terrorism and addressing the broader security challenges facing the nation,” the DHQ stated.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum expressed his condolences to the military regarding the soldiers’ deaths. In a statement from the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, the governor remarked that the attack underscores the brutality of Boko Haram terrorists.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Borno, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the armed forces and the families of the fallen soldiers. May Allah grant them eternal peace and provide strength to the affected families,” the governor said.
