The National youth Movement (NYM), a civil society organization has awarded Oluwafemi Olurinde, a popular youth leader in Lagos with a special recognition.
The 2024 Golden Citizen Award ceremony was held at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos where the group celebrated individuals making significant contributions to poverty eradication, social justice, and combating injustice.
President of National youth Movement (NYM), in Lagos, David Thomas highlighted the organization’s commitment to recognizing changemakers who possess the vision and perseverance to drive meaningful change in society.
Delivering his speech at the event, Oluwafemi Olurinde who was represented by Michael Olatise, encouraged Nigerians to advocate for their rights amid prevailing injustices and unfavorable policies.
“The protest is firstly, part of all Nigerians’ fundamental human rights, especially when seeking and demanding good governance from ‘leaders’ in public offices. So you are about to exercise your fundamental rights entrenched in our constitution.
“You all will agree with me that Nigerians have seen the direction of destruction that the present regime is on, leading the country to ruins, with the material condition of the people at an all-time decline,” Olurinde stated.
He further charged Nigerians to support Omoyele Sowore at the planned #fearless protest on October 1st, urging citizens to stand up and be part of history against the current neo-liberalism in Nigeria. He emphasized that the consequences of these bad policies of government recognize no group or demography,as everyone bears the brunt.
“Let us occupy the streets and shut down the streets to demand good governance at the fearless protest; the struggle continues until we win. Solidarity Forever,” he concluded.
In the meantime, Olurinde has called on the federal government to release peaceful protesters who were arrested and incarcerated during the #ENDSARS AND #ENDBADGOVERNANCE protests, urging the government to drop the false charges of treason without delay. He also lamented the current freezing of his bank account, which he claimed was done without justification, urging federal government to unfreeze it.
Olurinde was unable to attend the ceremony in person but remains a steadfast voice for Nigerian youth and social justice.
