Ibadan will always remember June 27 for a tragic event that shook a family: Pa Temidayo Ogunlade’s brutal mob attack.
Pa Ogunlade had been experiencing complications and left his house early one day without returning home as usual.
His brother, Mr. David Olaolu David revealed that Pa Ogunlade suffered from memory loss.
According to Mr. David, Pa Ogunlade went into a premises around Bode Owo in Itesiwaju area of Omi Adio without being recognized by anyone there. People mistook him for a thief due to his memory deficiency.
The false alarm attracted passersby who swooped on Pa Ogunlade and beat him mercilessly until he collapsed.
As commotion died down, Pa Ogunlade’s owner rushed him to a hospital in their car in an attempt to save his life.
However, when they arrived at University College Hospital (UCH), they were turned away due to lack of beds.
The owner then took him Adeoyo Hospital but unfortunately found out that staff were on strike.
On their way back from Adeoyo Hospital for their third destination hospital option (name withheld), Pa Ogunlade lost too much blood before breathing his last.
Mr. David shared this story with us because he resides in Lagos.
He recounted how they got news about Pa Ogunlade’s whereabouts through private radio broadcasts only after discovering that he had passed away.
It turned out that an innocent Samaritan had taken Pa Ogunlade’s body back home only for police officers at an unknown location arrested him upon arrival at their station without recognizing Pa Ogunlade due lack of information about his identity.
Residents of Bode-Owo have been living with sleepless nights due to repeated robbery incidents in their community.
It’s against this backdrop that they suspected every stranger entering their neighborhood which led them mistakenly attack Pa Ogunlade.
