The Ogun State Police Command has debunked a claim by a pregnant woman, Rahemat Lateef, who said she was abducted by unknown gunmen while on her way to the state hospital in Abeokuta for child delivery. According to the police, the alleged abduction was actually a fabricated story.
In a statement issued on her Twitter handle, the police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, revealed that Rahemat had suffered a miscarriage and decided to fake her own kidnap to avoid the wrath of her husband, who was expecting her to deliver a baby.
Odutola explained that after suffering another miscarriage, Rahemat concocted the kidnap story as a way to escape her husband’s anger. She fled to Kwara State and later returned to Abeokuta with her father.
Rahemat’s husband, Ogunbunmi Lateef, had initially reported that he received a WhatsApp message informing him of his wife’s kidnap by armed men. However, police investigations revealed that Rahemat had actually planned and executed the fake kidnap herself.
Odutola said: “Rahemat Lateef, whose husband reported that she was abducted, was never abducted. She planned her journey to Kwara State to escape the wrath of her husband because she had suffered repeated miscarriages and feared his reaction. She orchestrated the whole story and was tracked down by the anti-kidnapping team until she returned.”
Rahemat is currently receiving medical attention and is safe.
