The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, recounted her harrowing experience when Reigners Bible International Church in Uyo collapsed on December 10, 2016.
The incident occurred during the ordination of senior pastor Akan Weeks, resulting in the death of scores of worshippers and injuring many others.
Speaking at her daughter’s wedding in Uyo on Saturday, Eyakenyi revealed that she narrowly escaped death because she stepped out of the building a few seconds before the collapse. The area where she was sitting was severely damaged by the collapse.
Eyakenyi acknowledged that her daughter, Blessing, had a second set of parents in former Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel and his wife, Martha Udom Emmanuel.
She explained that during Blessing’s Master’s program in the US, the former governor and his wife took care of her, and Governor Emmanuel even handled her training until she returned from the US. Eyakenyi described this as a great sacrifice.
The deputy governor expressed gratitude for still being alive today due to that sacrifice.
She recalled that if she hadn’t left the church a few seconds earlier, she would have been killed in the collapse. Many people sitting near her were seriously injured, but she survived due to God’s intervention.
Eyakenyi also thanked Governor Umo Eno for accepting her as part of his team and standing by her family.
“God has used the governor to be a great blessing to our family and to the children seated here today. I lack words to appreciate him. He knows that truly, truly I appreciate my governor for everything,
“I want to say thank you. May God bless you and your wife,” Eyakenyi said.
