Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the administration led by President Bola Tinubu, stating that Nigerian workers have faced significant challenges under this leadership. Atiku emphasized that no administration in the nation’s history has disregarded workers’ rights as much as the current one, highlighting the daily struggles faced by workers due to the soaring prices of essential goods.
In a statement released on International Workers Day, Atiku expressed disappointment in the living conditions of Nigerian workers, which he described as dire despite the government’s promises of wage increments. He pointed out the ongoing hardships faced by Nigerians, including long queues at petrol stations due to the removal of fuel subsidy and the subsequent impact on the populace.
Atiku criticized the government’s decision to unilaterally remove the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit without consulting the Nigerian workers’ representatives, highlighting the continued increase in tariffs without addressing corruption and inefficiencies in the system. He lamented the lack of consultation and empathy from the government towards the plight of the Nigerian worker.
Drawing on the historical role of Nigerian workers in fighting against tyranny and bad governance, Atiku emphasized the current administration’s failure to uphold workers’ rights and improve their living conditions. He condemned the government’s focus on international rhetoric about reducing dependence on government while neglecting the harsh reality faced by Nigerian workers.
