Offa Student Union NHQ Concludes 3-Day Educational Programme

The National Headquarters of Offa Student Union (OSU) successfully concluded its three-day educational programme on Friday, May 24, 2024.

The event was graced by several notable dignitaries including Mrs. Mujidat Bammeke-Oladipo, the Director of Students Affairs (DSA) of Lens Polytechnic Offa; Ogbeni David Seun Ogunniyi Adato, Kwara State House of Assembly honourable member representing Ojomu Balogun Constituency, represented by Sunday Alli, Owodunni Rasheed, Ridwan Balogun and Obama; Engr. Lawal Kunle Sheriff (Up Lawal); members of the Offa Descendant Union (ODU); and representatives from the Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode (MOK) Foundation, led by Mr. Nurudeen Mohammad, the Foundation’s Director of Media.

Mrs. Mujidat Bammeke, during her speech as the guest speaker, educated students on the impact of social media on their lives, particularly on their academic performance.

She outlined the pros and cons of social media usage, emphasizing how it can be a double-edged sword. “Social media can cause distractions and reduce productivity,” she warned. “For instance, students might get sidetracked by notifications from apps like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram when they should be focusing on assignments.”

Mrs. Bammeke also highlighted the positive aspects of social media, such as improved communication, access to information, and research opportunities. However, she cautioned students to limit their use of phones to enhance their educational performance.

Hon. Adato gave 2025 WAEC sponsorships to five students. He also presented some exercise books to all the students.

The MOK Foundation doled out money to the best three students in Debate and Quiz competitions: the first was given ₦30,000, the second was given ₦20,000, and the third was given ₦10,000.

The ODU presented a sum of ₦20,000 to support the union.

The Offa Students Union (OSU), Kwara State University chapter, also provided token amounts to the first-place winners in the two categories.

Representing the MOK Foundation, Mr. Nurudeen Mohammad encouraged students to persevere, even if they did not secure top positions in the quiz and debate competitions.

He also encouraged students to emulate the foundation’s commitment to education and societal contribution.

He reiterated the foundation’s ongoing support for OSU and announced cash prizes for the winners: ₦10,000 for third place, ₦20,000 for second place, and ₦30,000 for first place in both segments.

Certificates were presented to all participants, and the top schools received school boards.

Hon. Lawal Kunle Sheriff, a former OSU President, urged students to avoid becoming addicted to social media, as it can negatively impact their education.

He also praised the programme’s success and urged the union to consider rotating the event venue in the future to provide equal opportunities for all schools.

Comrade Soliu Mubarak Olaiya, alias Biggy, expressed his gratitude to all participants, supporters, and organizers, including Dr. Akeem Oyewale, the Managing Director of Marble Capital Limited and Chairman of Offa Volleyball Club; Suraj Oyewale Jarus, CEO of Jarus Homes; Qs. Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode, the founder of MOK Foundation; Hon. Seun Ogunniyi Adato; the Offa Descendant Union (ODU); Mrs. Mujidat Bammeke; and the principal of Offa Grammar School.

He also extended a special thanks to former President Engineer Lawal Kunle Sheriff for his continuous support.
