The Lagos State Government has introduced a discount and amnesty program aimed at encouraging property owners to obtain necessary permits and comply with building regulations.
Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, announced these initiatives during a press briefing to commemorate the first year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
The primary objective of these initiatives is to enhance public safety and foster a sustainable urban environment by promoting adherence to building regulations.
Olumide emphasized the importance of these measures, citing concerns about the lack of approvals for approximately 80% of buildings in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos.
As part of the program, civil servants are eligible for a 40% rebate on planning permits to incentivize compliance with proper procedures for property ownership.
Additionally, property owners with unpermitted buildings are granted a 90-day amnesty period to apply for permits without facing penalties.
This initiative aims to address existing non-compliance issues and promote a more regulated building environment.
Olumide further explained that during the amnesty period, owners and developers of existing buildings can obtain planning permits without incurring statutory penal fees.
Moreover, a five percent discount is applicable to payments completed within 10 working days of the bill’s issuance.
These measures seek to streamline the permit acquisition process and encourage timely compliance with building regulations.
