A man from Ekiti State, identified as Amusa Lasisi, has revealed his decision to volunteer as a teacher for secondary school students at Government Day College, Tunga Lowcost, Minna, free of charge. In a letter dated April 29, 2024, titled “Application for voluntary teaching engagement on science subjects for compassion, patriotism, and active community development,” Lasisi cited the high failure rates in recent examinations conducted by various examination bodies as his motivation. He expressed his desire to focus on student development rather than pursuing opportunities abroad, commonly referred to as the ‘Japa’ syndrome.
Addressing the principal of the school, Lasisi highlighted his previous experience with the National Youth Service Scheme in Kwara State in 2019, where he learned the values of nationalism and active community service. He applied to Government Day Science College (GDSC) in Tunga Lowcost, Minna, Niger State, offering to teach science and technical subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Basic Science, and Technology.
Explaining his decision to choose this particular school, Lasisi mentioned being moved by the complaint of a family friend’s son about the absence of a Mathematics teacher. Due to the school’s proximity to his residence, he decided to extend his voluntary teaching services there. Lasisi expressed satisfaction with the reception he received from the principal, teachers, and students upon introducing himself and his intentions.
Regarding his means of support while offering voluntary service, Lasisi mentioned engaging in various income-generating activities such as consultancy, data analysis, electrical installation, and editorial work. He urged other Nigerians with skills and resources not to seek opportunities abroad but to contribute to their country’s development.
Lasisi, a graduate of Electrical/Electronics Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, in 2018, completed his National Youth Service Corps program in Kwara State in 2020.
