On Wednesday, the Lagos State Government initiated the process of clearing shanties and evicting illegal occupants from Ikoyi Towers.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced via X that following the expiration of a 48-hour vacation notice, a joint team comprising the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Special Task Force on Environmental Offences began enforcement actions.
Wahab stated that the shanties within the Ikoyi Towers compound housed illegal occupants, posing security threats to the environment and causing nuisance to the state.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to reclaiming land and public facilities, which have been unlawfully converted for personal use.
This measure aims to ensure public safety, enforce urban planning regulations, and address the proliferation of illegal settlements and structures in Lagos State.
Earlier, Wahab had reported the presence of hundreds of undocumented residents on the premises lacking proper sanitation facilities. He highlighted the security and environmental risks posed by these occupants, leading to the issuance of eviction notices.
He emphasized the necessity of vacating the area within 48 hours due to the inability to ascertain the daily activities of the undocumented residents.
