El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, has taken a bold step by initiating an inquiry into allegations of bribery within his government, including his own involvement. This decision, aimed at purging corruption from the system, was announced through a video shared on a popular platform, where Bukele conveyed his determination by stating, “It’s not the first, and it won’t be the last.”
In the video, Bukele, speaking in Spanish and later translated into English, addressed the issue directly. He pointed out that everyone present in the meeting belonged to the executive branch, except for the Attorney General. Despite not being part of the executive branch, the Attorney General was present for a specific reason: Bukele publicly tasked him with investigating all individuals present, both retrospectively and going forward. This public declaration underlines Bukele’s commitment to transparency and accountability within his administration.
Bukele also expressed his thoughts on mortality, acknowledging the inevitability of death while emphasizing the importance of leaving behind a positive legacy. He admitted his fear of being remembered as a corrupt leader and drew parallels with past presidents who were tainted by associations with corruption. Specifically, he mentioned President Rodrigo Duarte, who, despite not being directly involved in corruption, was criticized for surrounding himself with corrupt individuals, which tarnished his legacy. Bukele vowed not to fall into the same trap, striving to be remembered as a leader who not only refrained from corruption himself but also prevented others from engaging in corrupt practices.
