A wave of sorrow engulfed the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State, on Thursday when the lifeless body of a female student, Aishat Yahaya Olabisi, was discovered in her off-campus accommodation.
Olabisi, a diligent 300-level student majoring in Food and Science Technology, was found deceased shortly after returning to her room from attending her first examination of the ongoing first-semester exams.
While some attributed her sudden demise to the stress of examinations, the university’s management moved swiftly to dispel misconceptions surrounding the tragic incident.
Addressing the misinformation, Prof. Abdulkadir Dambazau, the Dean of Students Affairs, released a statement dated May 3, 2024, titled “Clarification Regarding False Statement About Student’s Death.”
The statement refuted claims circulating in certain media outlets, clarifying that Olabisi did not die within the university’s student hostel as reported. Instead, she passed away peacefully in her sleep at her off-campus residence on April 23, 2024.
According to the statement, Olabisi had spent her last evening immersed in her studies, diligently preparing for upcoming examinations. Despite expressing intentions to rest briefly after breakfast the next morning, fate intervened tragically.
Upon discovering her unresponsive state in the early afternoon, immediate measures were taken, and Olabisi was swiftly transported to the university clinic, where medical professionals confirmed her passing.
In adherence to protocol, her remains were subsequently transferred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for postmortem analysis to determine the cause of her sudden demise.
The grieving parents of the deceased, who arrived from Ilorin, bid farewell to their beloved daughter, surrounded by family, friends, and members of the academic community, during her burial on April 24, 2024.
The university community mourns the loss of Yahaya Aishat Olabisi, remembering her as a diligent and bright student whose memory will forever remain in their hearts.
