The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has initiated an enforcement campaign to reclaim the crucial System 1 Drainage Channel midstream in Ojota and Ogudu.
Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab announced the commencement of this initiative via his official X handle on Monday. He highlighted that a recent inspection revealed new structures being erected by property owners within the designated areas.
System 1, established in 1974, serves as the largest primary channel in alleviating flood-related challenges across major parts of Lagos mainland, including Ogudu, Ojota, Ifako, Gbagada, and Maryland. Wahab emphasized that discussions with property owners and residents had been ongoing since 2021, concluding in November 2023.
Despite serving contravention notices to owners of buildings within 140 meters of System 1 since 2021, encroachments on the right of way and alignments have persisted. Property owners within the approved 140 meters Right of Way of the channel were given nearly three years for voluntary compliance, yet some continued construction activities.
Wahab also revealed plans for major maintenance dredging at Okota, Faseun Bridge System 6E, situated off Ago Palace Way. This dredging effort aims to enhance water flow and eliminate waste accumulation under the bridge, thus mitigating flooding risks.
Additionally, in response to flooding threats, the Lagos State Government initiated a dredging operation in the Ikorodu area, targeting the primary channel in Awobo Estate. This proactive measure aims to prevent potential disasters and ensure the safety of residents in the region.
