The fourth edition of the Otunba Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke Memorial Football Championship kicked off in grand style at the Osogbo City Stadium, as Orolu LG defeated Osogbo LG by 1-0.
The Memorial Football Championship is dedicated in honour of the first Civilian Governor of Osun State, Otunba Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke and solely powered by Rep. Bamidele Salam, who represents the good people of Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency of Osun State in the National Assembly.
The ceremonial kick off was performed by Rep. Bamidele Salam in company of some political leaders in the state.
The initiator of the yearly competition, Bamidele Salam tasked the participating teams to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, noting that the Competition has over the years opened doors for talented footballers across the state.
He said, “Since the competition started four years ago, we’ve been able to identify talents which have been listed in major leagues across the country. I remember last year, we had about two players who have been taken by major leagues in the country.
“Also, we’ve been able to identify stars. The competition has actually raised the bar in youth football in Osun. It is becoming a flagship for youth football competition and the most engaging in the state. It raises awareness.
According to the chairman, organising committee, Oladele Bamiji (HOB) said each local government is represented by a team including the area office, Modakeke. He said the game is a knockout one. “In all we are having 31 teams in the competition this year. The technical team will do the feature.”
The Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke Memorial Cup Competition was initiated by Honourable Bamidele Salam in the year 2020, to immortalize the selfless, philanthropic service of the first civilian Governor of Osun State, who was a former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and an astute Politician when he was alive.
Adeleke Dynasty FC, Eyiowuawi FC and Egbedore FC are the past winners of the prestigious Memorial Football Competition.
