The Offa Descendants’ Union, ODU, United Kingdom branch, has flagged off a vision project for the people of Offa and its neighbouring communities. The project was in conjunction with the University College Hospital (UCH) Ilorin as part of efforts to reduce the incidence of avoidable blindness in society.
The flag-off ceremony was held on November 13, 2023, at the ODU premises in Offa. During his interactions with the organisers and people at the occasion, the Olofa of Offa, HRH Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II Ajagungbade I, thanked the organisers and described the initiatives as a good gesture to help the less privileged people who cannot afford expensive procedures and medicines. He prays for the success of the programme and assures them of his support.
The ODU National President, Alhaji Azeez Muhydeen Olaniyi Salako, who was represented by the ODU National Vice President I, Treasurer, and Social Secretary, who doubles as the acting National PRO of the union, commended the organisers of the outreach and assured them of his support. The national president has also announced that, from his pocket, he will provide free feeding for the organisers throughout the programme.
Among those who attended the flag-off ceremony were High Chiefs Essa, Ojomu, Balogun, Asalofa. Others were members of the Offa Traditional Council and crème de la crème individuals and groups within and outside Offa. Residents of Offa and its neighbouring communities, who were in their hundreds, benefitted from the project at the opening ceremony.
The one-week programme will provide people with comprehensive eye examinations, eye drops, medicines, medicated eyeglasses, and surgeries free of charge in cases requiring such. It will also include community health education focusing on eye health and general health promotion.
