An unfinished building used as a diesel storage place caught fire on Tuesday, destroying five tankers totaling 20,400 liters of diesel in the Farawa Kwanar Yashi neighborhood of Kano.

According to the state fire service, the event was caused by a spark from a portable generator that was being used to upload diesel from diesel tankers to other surface tanks.

Three people who were caught in the fire were recovered alive and taken to the hospital for treatment, according to Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, spokesman for the State Fire Service (SFS).

He added that their control room received an emergency contact from a staff member reporting the fire outbreak at 00:29 hours, at which point their guys responded at the scene of the fire outbreak.

He further explained that on their arrival, they found an uncompleted building of about 200 x 200 ft used as a diesel storage area, about five diesel tankers containing about 20,400 litres of diesel, one Lifan machine and three portable generators were ablaze.

He said they successfully controlled the situation and, saved three diesel tankers and nine surface tanks and stopped the fire from spreading to other premises.

He added, “Three victims who were trapped namely Mai Daura Sadi 24 years old, Hassan Sadi and Iliyasu Sadi about 25 years respectively were all rescued alive.”
