Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) nominee for president, claimed on Sunday that the federal government has “purview” over the issues contributing to the nation’s rising poverty rate.
The challenges of security and “economic viability,” according to Obi, who revealed this at the Arise TV presidential town hall series on Sunday night, are the responsibility of the federal government.
According to the former governor of Anambra State, the poverty rate will decline if the federal government secures the country and creates an environment that is favorable to businesses.
“Most of the things causing poverty today reside in the purview of the Federal Government. I am going to deal with it,” he said.
Recall that the federal government had last week blamed State governors for the inescapable underdevelopment of communities in local government areas.
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in its response, said the Federal Government’s inability to secure the country is responsible for the rise in the poverty rate.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had in November announced that 133 million Nigerians are multidimensionally poor.
