Donald Trump, a former US president, has had his Twitter account restored.
After the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Twitter banned the account. On Friday night, Elon Musk, the company’s new CEO, asked Twitter users if they thought Trump should be allowed back on the platform.
“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk tweeted Saturday night. “Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Latin for “the voice of the people is the voice of God.”
On Saturday night, the final poll results showed 51.8% in favor and 48.2% opposed. 15 million people participated in the poll.
The former president’s return to the social media platform where he was previously its most prominent, if contentious user, is now possible thanks to the eagerly awaited decision from the new owner. With nearly 90 million followers, his tweets frequently affected the markets, shaped the news cycle, and influenced Washington’s agenda.
Trump has previously stated that he would stay on his platform, Truth Social, rather than join Twitter again, but a shift in his stance might have significant political repercussions. In order to become only the second commander in chief ever elected to two nonconsecutive terms, the former president declared this month that he would run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
