Following controversial and divisive remarks made by PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has urged the party to apologize to Nigerians.
Atiku had said: “I know the whole of this country. I have built bridges across this country. I think what the average northerner needs is somebody who is from the north, who also understands the other parts of Nigeria, and who has been able to build bridges across the rest of the country.
“This is what the northerner needs. He (the northerner) doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Igbo candidate. This is what the northerner needs. I stand before you as a pan-Nigerian of northern origin”.
Shortly after landing in Port Harcourt from Spain, Wike stated that while he believed Atiku would make such a declaration at such a pivotal moment in the country’s history, the presidential candidate’s attitude would support his struggle for equity, justice, and fairness within the PDP.
He argued that unless the party took swift action to address the problem and mobilize Nigerians, the public would start to view the party as lacking in fairness and justice.
