Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima, the running mates for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, have received praise from local government chairmen across the nation for establishing the local government directorate within the APC’s Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

They called the action a masterstroke and historically significant.

The PCC’s creation of a local government directorate, according to the council leaders, is a commendable move.

Local government practitioners were included as the director, deputy director, and secretary for the local government directorate on the APC PCC list, among other directorates.

The duo said: “In a communiqué issued at the end of the 32nd National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), held on September 1 in Lokoja, Kogi State, it was stated that ‘with respect to the 2023 general election, ALGON will support and give its commitment to any presidential candidate that is committed to the actualisation of full local government autonomy.’”

The APC, they said, had displayed a commitment to their cause.

Kolade David Alabi, the chairman of the Bariga Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, was named director. Aminu Muazu Maitafa and Bala Usman Chamo, his counterparts at the Lafia Local Government in Nasarawa State and the Dutse Local Government in Jigawa State, were named deputy directors and secretaries, respectively.

On behalf of other council chairmen, Alhaji Aliyu Usman of Gombe State and Bode Adetunji of Ekiti State issued a statement praising the APC as a group with good intentions for managing local government.
“No doubt, the ruling party has once again demonstrated its love and determination to ensure the growth of local government administration in the country.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has since the inception of his administration not hidden his feelings to see that the local government administration in the country gets its rightful place through moves to make them truly autonomous.

“We are assuring the APC Presidential Campaign Council led by President Buhari and the party’s standard-bearer, Asiwaju Tinubu and Senator Shettima of our resolve to mobilise local governments across the country to ensure APC wins the presidential election,” the duo said.
