Hundreds of millions of people throughout the world are in danger due to global food security, and the governments of Nigeria, Spain, the United States, the African Union, the European Union, Colombia, Germany, and Indonesia have come to an agreement to help.
It was revealed in a statement released in New York yesterday that the leaders made the announcement following a meeting on Tuesday.
The leaders claimed that the pandemic, mounting pressure from the climate catastrophe, high prices for energy and fertilizer, and protracted conflicts had all made the problem of food insecurity worse.
They noted that the invasion of Ukraine by Russia had disrupted supply networks and production, leading to an increase in food insecurity for the world’s most vulnerable people.
The statement reads: “We can only overcome global food insecurity by working together to create innovative partnerships – including international financial institutions and other key stakeholders – within the global community. We commit to strengthen international cooperation and partnership initiatives between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organisations as well as civil society organisations. As of September 20, this year, over 100 United Nations Member States have endorsed the Roadmap for Global Food Security – Call to Action.
