Following the recent surge in cases of kidnappings, ritual killings, banditry among others recorded in the country, The Federal Polytechnic, Offa in Kwara State held a campaign against social vices on Tuesday.
Students of Mass Communication Department were seen carrying placards with different inscriptions such as “Stay Away From Political Thuggery. A Voter Today Can Be A Contestant Tomorrow,” “Stop Celebrating Them. They Are Cyber Fraudsters,” “Stop Squandering Our Future. Money Laundry Is Illegal,” “Your Life Is An Asset To Us, Say No To Drug Abuse,” “I Am A True Nigerian, I Say No To Kidnapping,” among others.
Speaking during the campaign in the school premises, the Acting Rector of FEDPOFFA, Dr. Olarongbe Afolabi said the institution is geared toward fighting these vices.
Represented by J.O Yusuf, Deputy Registrar, Pension and Passage said “we have the belief that through sensitization as this, the future is assured. We are helping ourselves.
“The management appreciates your HOD, Wole Alawode.”
Yusuf thereafter appealed to the students to imbibe values that will showcase them as good representatives of the school.
Also speaking, Wole Alawode, the Head of the Department said, “today we are campaigning against yahoo-yahoo, banditry, drug abuse, armed robbery and others that are hindering the society.
“Our duty is to graduate students who are found worthy in learning and character. We hope to change people’s perception and approach to wealth, progress and success with focus on the youths. We want to tell them you don’t progress by cheating, you don’t progress by cutting corners, and by undermining the society but through hard work, commitment and dedication. Social vices won’t help them to progress, it is a loss-loss situation which we want to correct. We are campaigning to correct that.
“What they are listening to negate good conduct. We don’t want our students and members of the society to listen to those. We want them to imbibe the spirit of handwork, dedication and commitment. These are the values that can make anyone to progress in life. They end on being killed, or prosecuted and jailed on these vices,” Alawode said.
One of the project supervisors, Zakariyahu Kunle Mujeeb, said “as one of the supervisors for this project, we noticed that social vices are rampant in recent times. It is one of the major issues Nigeria has to tackle. One of the ways to sensitise our people is through usage of medium such as this. We have to sensitise our students, youths and others that these vices are a major problem that calls for urgent attention.
“Our society needs to understand that internet fraud alias yahoo-yahoo, ritual killings, kidnappings and the likes constitute negative energy. They also give a bad idea of what a society is and represents. Thus we want to encourage our students that there is no other path these lead to other than destruction.”
