Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, has lost the power struggle inside the PDP after INEC recognized the candidates of the faction headed by Chief Dan Orbih, the National Vice Chairman of Southsouth.
Parallel primaries staged by the two PDP groups in May of this year resulted in legal action. The Supreme Court has not yet announced its ultimate decision.
Nyesom Wike of Rivers, who is at odds with Atiku Abubakar for president, is supporting Orbih, the recently-retired chairman of the Edo PDP.
Obaseki’s friend and the current PDP chairman in Edo is Dr. Tony Aziegbemi.
However, as a backup plan, the majority of Obaseki’s supporters ran for office in the 2023 elections as members of the Labour Party (LP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
