Nigerian students in Northern Cyprus regret the rise in their suicide rates and racial persecution they encounter there.
This was made known in a statement released on Wednesday by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
Members of the Nigerian Diaspora Youth Ambassador reportedly alerted authorities when they paid a visit to the commission’s head, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja, according to NIDCOM.
Part of the statement read, “The president of the association, Mr. David Alozie, who led a four-man delegation to Hon. (Dr) Abike Dabiri-Erewa Chairman, CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission in Abuja, said the purpose of the visit to the commission is to appeal for quick intervention on the plight of Nigerian students in Northern Cyprus.”
According to Alozie, Nigerian students are subjected to racial profiling, expelled as soon as they arrive, and required to pay tuition in British Pounds while other international students must pay in Turkish Lira.
It was discovered that the students’ discriminatory treatment had contributed to their sadness, which in turn had increased the rate of suicide.
