Civil Society Organisation of Nigeria, CSON has protested against sexual immorality among minors in the society, on Thursday.
Members of the organizations can be sighted carrying different placards with different inscriptions such as “Don’t throw away fetuses”, “LIFE IS NOT TO Be TRASHED. SAVE OUR FUTURE”, “PROTECT THE INNOCENCE OF OUR GROWING CHILDREN”, “Parental guidance is very crucial to the upbringing of children”, “SAY NO TO INDECENCY”, “LET’S STOP Indecent TV SHOWS”, “NO TO PREMARITAL SEX & TEENAGE PREGNANACIES”, “LETS SAY NO TO KIDS EXPOSURE TO SEXUALIZATION” among others.
Speaking during the protest which was in partnership with Edumind Youth Education & Empowerment Initiatives in Osogbo, Osun State, a Librarian in Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Mrs. Adenekan Faoziah Niyilowo-Lawal said it is essential that parents educate their wards as to all rudiments of sexual education.
In her words, “most parents leave their children to the hands of the teachers without care what they are being taught in schools. Most of them don’t really know what is happening to their children, whereas children need to know all these things from home.
“They only learn from school, aside that they learn from the peers, on the internet and on the social media and these things can affect them. It also make them think they are matured and civilized and they can have free sex. We want to tell them that the fact they have sex education does not mean they should put it into practice, it is just for them to be aware of yourself, for you to know who you are.
“Even for boys, they can masturbate and think it is right for them. But it is not. Free sex is not their right.”
She added that sexual education is more important than before as it is not an uncommon thing to see a young of ten years having menstrual flow.
Also, Mrs. Haleemah Alli-Bankole of Pen Publishers stated that, “I must commend the government for things they put in place such as one that says abortion is illegal, another one is same sex bill that frowns at homosexuality.
Mrs. Alli-Bankole added that social media code of practice and hate speech should be extended to other illegalities and moral as well as religious values.
