The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has asked the National Youth Service Corps for help in promoting healthy lifestyles among Nigerians.
Prof (Mrs) Moji Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, said this today in Abuja during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between NAFDAC and NYSC.
The presence of Corps Members in all 774 Local Government Areas of the country, according to Adeyeye, would be a good driver of the effort because they would serve as change agents, educating Nigerians about the hazards of drug misuse and expired drugs, particularly at the grassroots.
She stated that the agency’s mandate is to protect Nigerians’ health alongside Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
“The MSMEs are what drive the economy, and having NAFDAC Desks in all 774 LGAs will bring NAFDAC closer to the people through the Corps Members,” she said.
Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, who was represented by Barrister Ibrahim Ahmed Tijani, Director, Legal Services, assured that the Scheme would comply by the requirements of the MoU.
He praised NAFDAC for taking the initiative, noting that Corps Members could contribute to the collaboration because of their past national assignments’ results.
Alhaji Abdulrasaq Salawu, Director, Community Development Service and Special Projects, also spoke, saying the initiative was long delayed.
He went on to say that Corps members would always be ready to raise awareness of the government’s national development programs and initiatives.
